Half-Day Trip to Cologne

A good friend of mine lives in NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia). I was supposed to visit her last year, however, never really found the time… >.< I have been to Cologne before but more or less on a bypass (if that’s even count).

My friend picked me up from the airport and we headed towards the city centre.

Despite that Cologne is counted as the fourth-largest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich) I found the city relatively “small”. Maybe because it doesn’t offer that many POIs to see (in my opinion)…

Our first stop was the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), which is declared as a World Heritage Site in 1996, and is currently the tallest twin-spired church at 157m (515 ft) tall.

From my previous posts you might have noticed that I like to see places from the top. Therefore, it is inevitable for me not to climb up the 533 steps inside the cathedral. Entrance to the cathedral is €4 per adult.

In comparison to other “old” tall buildings, I have to say that the spiral staircases were pretty easy and safe to climb up since it is appointed with handrail!

The view from top over the city is amazing and gives a beautiful overview of the Rhine River.

Afterwards we also visited the inside of the cathedral.

It has a very impressive interior…

… and not to mention its spectacular stained glass windows!

I think two of the most iconic places that people associate with Cologne are 1) Cologne Cathedral and 2) the Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke) with the massive love padlocks.

We walked all the way to the other side of the Hohenzollern Bridge, which offers a fantastic view of the Cathedral in the background.

From here we strolled alongside the river…

… until our stomachs started to growl #kidding 😉 My friend and I are both Sushi lovers, hence, it was clear that we went for sushi. The place that we ended up for lunch is called ‘Sweet Sushi’. Very cool name.

I think it’s the first time that I ever tried sushi with mango filling. Not the most authentic way but a nice experience.

After that we made our way towards Siegen, the place where my friend is currently living…
